Here is a creature design I did for Constantine Sekeris' new book MetaforFx (available for preorder on Amazon.com). The design is based on one of Constantine's brilliant sketches. He is a dear friend and one of the best creature designers working today. It was an absolute honor contributing to this book.

Sucker Punch Designs

Sucker Punch was an amazing project to work on. It was like designing four different movies all at once. I was able to tackle everything from creatures to props on this show. Zack Snyder was the most decisive director and the design phase was incredibly efficient.There were a lot of incredible designers on this project and it was an honor to contribute. I had a lot of fun.

An artist who's done breathtaking work for some of the year's most forgettable movies

When you look at Jerad S. Marantz's resume, it's packed with films you can barely remember watching. Jonah Hex, I Am Legend, Clash Of The Titans, Bedtime Stories, Percy Jackson, Nightmare On Elm St... but his concept art is unforgettable.

Marantz has been posting a ton of art on his blog from recent films he's worked on, and it's some of the most vivid creature and monster art we've seen in forever. It's up there with David Meng's art that we featured last week, for sure. (Marantz doesn't seem to have his own IMDB page, but he's all of his work is through Amalgamated Dynamics and The Aaron Sims Company, which are credited for creature design and the like.) This is a character for a story I've been writing since high school. Some of the sketches date back to the late 90's. I had to see what he would look like fully resolved. I sculpted him in Zbrush and brought him into Photoshop to finish. This was fun.

It was a pleasure designing for this film at the Aaron Sims Company. Louis Leterrier was one of the nicest directors I have ever worked for. Here are just a few images that where done for the film.

This creature took the longest to design. We must have easily done a few hundred concepts, but in the end it was well worth it. I’m very happy with what the character looked like in the film. Thanks MPC!

This version of the character showed the beautiful woman that Medusa used to be. She’s a lot faster in the film and transforms when she’s angry. I thought it was a good call to make the character something a man would want to look at.

This was a very fun character to work on. The idea was to design what being struck by Zeus would do to a man. During this design process we can up with solutions that could be done practically or as a CG character.

This was a concept for an androgynous Hades. Could have been creepy, but I’m glad they went with Ralph Fiennes . The only thing that took was the smoky wisps effects.

Here are a few designs I did a while back for a film in Spain. I think it was called "Without Sin" I have no idea whatever happened to it, but that's pretty common in film. The most fun was the sketches. Its rare that clients can read line work these days. Drawings don't seem to answer enough questions. Its a shame but still a very useful skill to have!
